Your project worksheet

Let’s measure it up.

Garage size estimate
The car presets are rough area estimates based on 250 sq ft per car, measure your floor and edit this value.
250
Optional allowance for surface condition and application loss, with no default waste assumed.
0
Epoxy coating coats
Dry film thickness unit
3.5–5 mils per coat (88.9–127 microns), this product's documented range.
4.5
Optional products
Additional decorative chip broadcast

Coating coverage is conservatively estimated at 300 sq ft per 2 US gal kit, per coat. The selected film thickness is checked against the manufacturer’s 3.5–5 mil range.

with a few details.

How it works

Measure the floor in square feet or choose a rough one-, two- or three-car estimate. The preset assumes 250 square feet per car, edit the area to match your actual floor. Choose one or two coats and enter the dry film thickness per coat in mils or microns.

The coating estimate uses 300 square feet per 2-gallon kit per coat, a conservative practical coverage from the linked manufacturer sheet. The maker gives a recommended dry film range of 3.5 to 5 mils. The thickness input is validated within that range, this estimator does not extrapolate coverage beyond it.

Select primer only for a previously coated or sealed floor, extra decorative-chip broadcast if desired, and an optional clear topcoat. The EpoxyShield coating kit already includes one decorative-chip bag. Add waste only if you want an allowance for your surface and application conditions.

Formula

  • Estimate coating kits

Area with waste = floor area × (1 + waste %) Coating kits = ceil(area with waste × coats ÷ 300 sq ft per kit per coat)

Coverage is the conservative 300 sq ft/kit value for the cited 2-gallon product. Buy whole kits.

  • Estimate optional products

Primer gallons = ceil(area with waste ÷ 400 sq ft per gallon) Clear topcoat kits = ceil(area with waste ÷ 500 sq ft per kit) Extra chip bags = max(0, ceil(area with waste ÷ chip coverage) − included chip bags)

Primer, clear coating and separate extra chips use their respective manufacturer coverage. The extra-chip quantity subtracts bags included with the selected epoxy kits.

Worked example

  1. Estimate a two-car garage

    2 × 250 sq ft = 500 sq ft ceil(500 sq ft × 1 coat ÷ 300 sq ft per kit) = 2 kits

At 4.5 mils per coat and no waste, this estimate is 2 × 2-gallon kits. Measure the actual floor because car-bay areas vary.

  2. Add optional products

    Primer: ceil(500 ÷ 400) = 2 gallons Clear topcoat: ceil(500 ÷ 500) = 1 kit

These optional quantities are separate from the epoxy kit. The coating kit includes one decorative-chip bag per kit.

Assumptions and safety

This is a product-specific material estimate, not a floor-condition assessment or application guarantee. Coverage depends on concrete porosity, texture, preparation, temperature and application technique. The user-selected thickness is only checked against the cited product range, practical coverage is kept at the conservative manufacturer figure.

The car presets are area estimates, not standard garage dimensions. Primer is included only when selected for a previously coated or sealed surface. Separate decorative-chip coverage is approximate and reflects the selected standard or heavy broadcast. Clear topcoat coverage applies over a freshly coated floor according to the linked instructions.

Follow the current product label and technical data. Prepare the concrete as specified, verify moisture and temperature conditions, use suitable ventilation and protective equipment, and keep ignition sources away from this solvent-based coating during application and cure. Follow the maker’s interval between coats and full cure time before vehicle traffic.

Frequently asked questions

How many gallons of epoxy do I need for a two-car garage?

This example uses 250 sq ft per car, so two cars estimate 500 sq ft. At 300 sq ft per 2-gallon kit for one coat, that is 2 kits. Measure your floor and use the product's current label before buying.

How much does one gallon of this epoxy cover?

The cited professional product sheet gives a practical range of 150 to 200 sq ft per gallon under recommended conditions. This estimator uses the conservative lower end: 300 sq ft per two-gallon kit per coat.

Do I need primer for a garage floor?

This optional estimate uses the maker’s primer for a previously coated or sealed surface. Whether primer is needed depends on the substrate and coating system. Follow the current product instructions for your floor.

Does the epoxy kit include decorative flakes?

The referenced Rust-Oleum EpoxyShield Professional Floor Coating kit includes one decorative chip bag. Choose an extra broadcast level only if you want more chips, the calculator subtracts the included bags from the sourced coverage estimate.
